Professor Koka is a US-based management scholar whose research interests lie primarily in corporate strategic alliances and networks, government trade and investment policies, social entrepreneurship, and offshore outsourcing.
His research has been published in premier academic journals including, MIS Quarterly, Decision Sciences, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Operations Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and Journal of International Business Studies. His papers have been nominated/selected for best-paper awards and his research has been funded by sources including the ASU-Motorola Great Communities Grant and the Innovation and Change Division – National Science Foundation. He sits on the editorial board of many academic journals and has received “outstanding reviewer” awards for his peer-reviews.
Professor Koka has taught courses on Strategic Management, Competitive Strategies for Emerging Markets, and Business Level Strategy for MBA/ Executive MBA/ Ph.D candidates and has consistently earned far-above-avergage teaching ratings from students. He has done consulting work for organizations such as Honeywell, Boeing, Jobing.com, and Pratham – an NGO. Additionally, he is an expert on the global steel industry. Prior to joining Rice University, Professor Koka held faculty appointments at Arizona State University and National University of Singapore.
Balaji Koka holds a Bachelor’s degree from Madurai Kamaraj University (Mechanical engineering), MBA from Indian Institute of Management – Calcutta, and Ph.D. from University of Pittsburgh (Strategic Management).
