A report

Keeping up with its on-going series of enriched talk lectures MYRA recently concluded the 6th EnVision Tech Talk titled ‘Business Intelligence & Business Analytics’ on the 28th of July 2017 at its Mysore campus.

It was delivered by Dr. H Raghav Rao, who presently is the AT&T Distinguished Chair in Infrastructure Assurance and Security with the University of Texas at San Antonio and a regular visiting faculty at MYRA. Dr. Rao is a US-based scholar of Information Systems Management. His research interests are in decision support systems, e-business, cyber-security, emergency response systems and information assurance. His recent research has implications for political revolutions, anti-terrorism initiatives, and communications during natural disasters, and corporate decision making. Dr. Rao co-edited four books and has authored or co-authored more than 175 technical papers, of which more than 100 are published in archival journals and his work has received best paper and best paper runner-up awards at recent AMCIS and ICIS conferences. He has received funding for his research from the National Science Foundation, CISCO, National Security Agency, Canadian Embassy, and the US Department of Defence.

The crux of Dr. Rao’s talk centred on a fact that the 21st century is being regarded as the age of data, information overload and in search of insights. It is estimated that the world would soon reach more than 35 zettabytes of data. Needless to add, ‘raising the bar’ with analytics is the key to success for businesses and managers alike. Big data is top of the mind for virtually every industry – from healthcare to financial services to retail. And the appetite for data and insights is ever increasing with time. Business intelligence is evolving as an autonomous discipline and encompasses four broad areas – Statistics and econometrics; Operations Research; Artificial Intelligence; and Database technologies. Dr. Rao covered a gamut of concepts and tools of Business Intelligence and provided an overview of the facets of the field with plenty of examples to illustrate. The talk also outlines the challenges of machine learning and modelling tools. It was truly a one hour micro course on the hot field of Business Intelligence, enough to ignite the minds of MYRACLES to the potential and possibilities of BI.
